Buhari To Inaugurate Transition Committe

The president-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.), may unveil his 35-member transition committee on Tuesday, April 21.

The committee will work with a counterpart committee from the outgoing government of the current president, Goodluck Jonathan.

The names of members of the transition committee will be officially presented to Nigerians at a party event to be organised in Abuja.

The All Progressives Congress (APC)’s source who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak on the matter said that Buhari will fly into Abuja on Monday from his Kaduna home in order to swear in the committee, This Day reports.

The source also confirmed an earlier report on the selection of the vice president-elect, Professor Yemi Osibanjo, to head the transition committee.

On the structure of the transition committee, the list is ruled by technocrats with only a few names selected based on party relationship.

“It is not about party patronage. We must not toy with this opportunity and as such every effort is being made to ensure that the right caliber of persons are chosen to handle the transition job. Buhari and the party place great importance on the quality and integrity of the recommendations that would come with the committee’s work,” the source said.

The party leadership met on Wednesday and Thursday last week as the National Working Committee (NWC), during which it decided on the list of transition committee members and made recommendations to the president-elect.

The source said the party’s national chairman, Chief John Oyegun, was in Kaduna on Saturday to meet with Buhari and to inform him of the recommendations from the NWC.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the national publicity secretary, when contacted by phone yesterday, confirmed that the party had made recommendations on the transition committee and submitted them to Buhari. When asked whether the announcement of the transition committee will be made on Tuesday, Mohammed said though there will be meeting on various issues on Monday, he could not specify what nature it would take.

The president-elect, speaking to journalists briefly after casting his vote during the governorship election in Daura, promised he would forward a list of the transition committee members with terms of reference to the party leadership for scrutiny.
