The federal government yesterday described as misleading reports suggesting that the handover date to the incoming administration had been brought forward to May 28.
It said that President Goodluck Jonathan will definitely handover to the president-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) on May 29 to mark the nation’s Democracy Day.
Information minister, Mrs Patricia Akwashiki, who made the clarification after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday, explained that the May 28 date earlier reported as handover date was for ministries and parastatals to hand over their briefs.
She said that the dinner to be hosted by Jonathan will still take place, adding that Buhari may be honoured with an award at the event as is the practice in most democracies.
Akwashiki further explained that handover briefs being coordinated by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) would be submitted by May 28.
She said, “In the council today, the discussion was still centred on transition. I have to make a little clarification because some people thought I said May 28 will be handover date. I never said that.
“I said May 28 will be the last day that we will have our handing over briefs by ministries and parastatals. I said from the 28th of this month to that date has been given to departments and ministries to submit their hand over notes.
“I remember somebody asked if there will be no vacuum if there is handover on May 28 and I replied that there will be no handing over on May 28. Handing over and inauguration will hold on May 29. The president is not handing over power on May 28; he is handing over power on May 29.”
She further affirmed that the transition process was ongoing and government ministries and agencies were already submitting their handover notes to the office of the SGFSGF
