Fifteen members of the Katsina State House of Assembly are poised for a showdown with the state governor, Ibrahim Shema, over his handling of state finances which they alleged was grossly inappropriate.
The 15 state lawmakers have equally vowed to write Shema an impeachment notice over the matter next week.
Speaking with newsmen in Katsina, spokesman of the 15 lawmakers, Danlami Kurfi, said the governor has of recent embarked on spending of public funds without due process, stressing that things must be done according to stipulated laws.
He said given the unfortunate situation, some of the legislators, most of whom are defectors to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as well as some aggrieved members within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have met and concluded that it was only proper to raise questions on the state’s finances as Katsina is greater than any individual.
“We have resolved to write him notice of impeachment next week as well,” he added.
He said the expenditure in question are the N33 billion local government funds, selling of state houses in Katsina and Abuja and SURE-P vehicles amongst others, adding that the governor has never at any given time sent audited state finance report as required by law to the legislature.
He said for over five months, the state assembly has refused to reconvene in fear of the moves by some of the legislators but added that “we shall put pressure for reconvening and to take actions which we deem are in the best interest of the state.
On the recent payment of gratuity allowances for the governor and his deputy, Kurfi said the governor’s action was illegal and could not stand, noting that the law does not allow a sitting governor to pay himself, adding that “what happens if he fails to reach the handing over date?”
He chided the leadership of the assembly for their unalloyed support and protection of the governor over the years, saying “we were few, but we have now reached a stage where we can boldly ask and make things happen at the assembly.”
