Royal Fathers Task President-elect On Constitutional Empowermen

Traditional rulers across the states have tasked President-elect Muhammadu Buhari on constitutional empowerment of traditional institutions, just as they sought for the appointment of a special adviser to the president on Chieftaincy Affairs to enhance grassroots governance.
This was part of the deliberation at the opening ceremony of the 8th National Development Summit of Traditional Rulers in Abuja yesterday with the theme, ‘Consolidating Nigeria’s Peace and Unity in Democratic Advancement’.
The summit is a dominant non-political forum of traditional rulers, inaugurated in 2008 by late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to foster friendship among the traditional rulers to foster unity, mutual understanding and peaceful co-existence between various ethnic groups.
In his address, chairman, Summit Governing Council, Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, HRM Emmanuel Ekemejewa Sideso Abe 1, regretted that royal fathers fanned embers of disunity during the just concluded general elections instead of preaching peace to their followers.
He noted that the country was currently grappling with massive population of idle vulnerable youths that lacked ingenuity and readiness to pursue excellence, peace and decent living, stressing that such attitude led to killings, stealing, kidnapping and terrorism.
Also speaking, the Attah of Igala land, HRM Micheal Idakwo, was optimistic that the call for constitutional empowerment of monarchs was timely, insisting that traditional rulers were united and more peaceful before the advent of colonial rule.
