Members of the Alumni Association of National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPPS) have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to jail all those found guilty of looting public funds.

They made the call at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday during a courtesy visit to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

A statement by the spokesman of the vice president, Laolu Akande, quoted the leader of the association, Major-General Lawrence Onoja, as commending Buhari’s determination to fight corruption and re-position the economy.

The vice president's spokesman also quoted Onoja as urging Buhari's administration to ensure a forensic audit of all government agencies.

Onoja, according to the statement, pledged the support of the association to Buhari's government for the actualisation of what he called the three-point agenda of security, corruption and economy.

In his remarks, Osinbajo faulted the polices of the past government, saying its planning and budgets did not reflect the conditions of the vast majority of Nigerians.

He said past planning, policy formulation and budgets were not accountable to the people and did not seem to have solutions that truly reflected "the understanding of the question of poverty".

The vice president, who expressed concern over "extreme poverty" in the country, said records had shown that Nigeria had 110 million poor people which, according to him, represents two third of the population.

“When you look at the economic and social policies, and you look at the level of illiteracy in parts of the country, some are extremely bad and some with  cases of about 80% or 90% of children out of school, and other cases of unimaginable decayed infrastructure”, he said.

According to him, one of the challenges of policy formulation is how to speak to the people and how to address their plight.

He charged his visitors to discuss how policy formulation ought to have roots in the conditions of the people.

Osinbajo welcomed the proposed policy round-table by the association, saying "what has been lacking in government is a time to think, reflect and consider policy while still working".
