The Governor of Katsina State, Hon. Aminu Bello Masari, has stated that extra 8,000 qualified primary school teachers are needed by the state for effective re-positioning of education at that level.
He also revealed that the state currently has about 19,833 primary school teachers out of which 4,996 are females.
Masari stated this at an interactive session with headmasters and stakeholders in education in the state.
He said the state also needs additional 3,000 classrooms to accommodate large number of pupils in both urban and rural areas in the state.
The governor decried the deplorable state of primary schools in the state despite the fact that it plays important role as foundation for quality education.
He said the state was rated fifth state with poor performance in WAEC and attributed the poor rating to deplorable state of primary education, stressing that the situation was unacceptable.
Masari who appeared worried, tasked teachers and stakeholders to join hands with government to address the problem, assuring teachers that government would look into the problem especially as regards to welfare so as to motivate teachers in the discharge of their duties.
He said his administration has engaged the services of the Department of Education of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, for training of teachers.
In an address, the chairman of Katsina State special committee on education, Badamasi Charanchi, said about 13,900 furniture are needed to accommodate pupils seating on the bare floor in schools across the state.
