2,000 ex-ISIS members joined Boko Haram in 2018 – Putin

The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin has disclosed that about 2,000 former members of Islamic State, IS, joined Boko Haram in 2018.

The Russian leader made the disclosure during a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari Wednesday on the sideline of the ongoing Africa-Russian summit in Sochi.

Mr Putin however expressed his country’s determination to secure Nigeria and the rest of Africa from terrorists through military and security cooperation.

Following the defeat of ISIS in the Middle East, some of its members reportedly fled to West Africa to aid Boko Haram, which has been terrorising Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroun since 2009.

They subsequently came up with the Islamic State of West African Province, ISWAP.

The alliance started in 2015, some experts believe.
