Worried at the frightening number of unemployed youths in the Federal Capital Territory, Plan International, Nigeria, has tasked FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to provide meaningful employment opportunities for the growing youth population.
This is just as the international organization tasked youths to be creative and engage themselves with green skills that can fetch them incomes, rather than waiting for white collar jobs.
The Director of Programme, Quality, and Influencing Plan International Nigeria, Helen Idiong, while speaking during an event to celebrate International Youth Day yesterday in Abuja said while the plans by the minister to restore the FCT masterplan is important what is more pressing is the need to look at the teaming jobless youths on the street.
She said, “We appeal to the FCT minister that even as he is putting his ideas into place to restore masterplan of Abuja back to what it used to be he should also put the youths at the forefront . Because the army of youth in the FCT not doing anything can trigger the configuration of this country.”
Idiong stated that the theme for this year international youth day “Green Skills” is very apt ‘ saying everyone will not be able to fit into space for white collar job so we are looking at green skills because it helps the environment and also the youths.
She explained that ‘Green skills’ goes around climate change and a better environment, saying for instance youths can find ways at turning waste to wealth, stressing that the youths must be creative as they can copy ideas and get funds from organizations or banks
She said, “Fom online, they can also look at what they are doing in other places and adapt it to Nigeria thereby find work for themselves.
For instance, there is this lady that does interlocking tiles from discarded rubber
In the spaces where they are there are green skills that can be done and won’t cost them much even if it does there are banks, organization that are willing to support them with funds, youths must think of what to do to generate income for themselves”
Idiong further stated that Plan International Nigeria is a girl and youth focussed organization and that they are doing what we can to make sure that the voice of the youths are heard so as to also motivate the government to also do something to support the youths
“We are trying to model things that we think the government can do. We are doing this so that the issues regarding youths are not left to the period of youth day celebrations, but we are bringing it to the forefront so that the government can look at our model and start intervening to help the youths,” she stated.
