Wike investigates issuance of C of Os to housing estates

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has inaugurated a task force to probe fraudulent issuance of Certificates of Occupancy (C of Os) to mass housing estates in the city. He stated yesterday that the measure was to ensure that each house in mass housing estates has its own C of O paid for.

The Rivers State ex-governor lamented that virtually all residential areas have been turned commercial, stating: “Something must be done about it.”

Wike maintained that those who contravened the Land Use Act must be recertified to pay appropriate penalties. He regretted that those given approvals for residential buildings had converted them to commercial structures, while those for commercial opted for residential houses.

The minister blamed government agencies in charge of land administration partly for the problem, adding that they had been included in the panel to sanitise the system.

Chaired by his Senior Special Assistant on Lands, Urban and Regional Planning, Michael Chinda, Executive Secretary, Federal Capital Development Authority, Shehu Ahmad, is secretary of the task force.

Other members include Director, Department of Development Control; Director, Department of Land Administration and Director, Department of Surveying and Mapping.

Others are Director, Department of Mass Housing, Director of AGIS and Director, Department of Urban and Regional Planning. Also included are two estate surveyors, Dr. Emmanuel Mark and Mr. Emma Okas.
